Dungeon Name Generator FAQ
Quick answers about the generator, the names, and how to use them at your table.
Are the dungeon names generated really free to use?
Yes. The generator is free with no sign-up, and the names it produces are short evocative phrases assembled from common fantasy words. That said, the tool cannot check whether a name is already used by a published module, novel, or game — do a quick search before using a name commercially.
How does the generator create names?
It combines curated word lists — adjectives, place words, owners, materials — using classic fantasy naming structures like 'The [Adjective] [Place]' and '[Place] of [Noun]'. All of it runs in your browser with cryptographically secure randomness, so every roll is a fresh combination.
Can I use these names for my D&D campaign?
Absolutely — that is what they are for. DMs use generated names for main dungeons, side delves, and improvised locations alike. Many keep a pre-rolled list in their campaign notes so they never have to invent a name mid-session.
Will I get the same names twice?
Possibly, eventually. The combinations run into the thousands, and the tool avoids repeats within a single batch, but with unlimited rolls some combinations will recur. Treat repeats as a sign to keep your favorites list — the best names deserve saving.
What is the difference between the name styles?
Classic Fantasy uses the versatile 'The [Adjective] [Place]' form. Dark & Ominous leans into horror with longer 'of' phrases. Ancient Ruins names imperial, material-heavy places with owners. One-Word Compounds produce punchy module-style names like Grimspire.
Can I use a generated name for a published product?
For inspiration, yes — but verify first. Search the name to make sure it is not already a published adventure, book, or trademarked property, especially the longer distinctive combinations. Short generic phrases are generally safe; distinctive long names deserve a check.
Does the tool store the names I generate?
No. Everything happens in your browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded, saved to an account, or sent to any server — there is not even a server involved.
How many names can I generate at once?
Up to 50 per batch, as many batches as you like. Ten is the default, which suits a session's worth of prep; fifty is useful when stocking a megadungeon or building a name bank for a whole campaign.
Can I suggest new words or structures?
Yes — suggestions for new adjectives, place words, owner titles, or name structures are welcome via the contact page. The word lists are curated by hand, so every suggestion is reviewed for tone fit before it goes in.
Some combinations sound strange — is that normal?
Yes, and it is by design. Random combination produces a spread: some names are instantly perfect, some are usable with a tweak, and some are delightfully weird. The weird ones are often the most inspiring — a strange name can seed an entire dungeon concept you would never have planned.
Does the generator work offline?
After the page loads once, the generator itself needs no network — all the word lists and logic are in the page. If your browser has the page cached, you can roll names with no connection at all.
Can I use generated names in my stream or actual-play show?
Yes. Short evocative names work well as episode titles and on-screen location cards. The same commercial-use caution applies: a quick search before building a brand around a name is always wise.
